Toolkit for youth on adaptation and leadership - CARE Climate Justice Centre

I worked with the CARE Climate Justice Centre (CJC) to develop the Toolkit for Youth on Adaptation & Leadership.

Created in partnership with the Global Center on Adaptation and Norad, the toolkit (available as a mobile-optimised website or as downloadable PDFs) equips young people with the knowledge and skills they need to engage in climate adaptation policy, advocacy, and action.

The toolkit covers climate change basics, adaptation, vulnerability, advocacy, planning, strategy, leadership and more. The eight modules are packed with resources, and learners can test their knowledge with short quizzes.

CARE also developed a handbook for a Training of Trainers (ToT) to accompany the toolkit. The handbook provides lesson plans and guidelines for facilitators working with youth on climate change education. CARE Climate and Resilience Academy ran the ToT in 2023.

As a consultant on this project, I did the following:

Toolkit

  • Reviewed, edited, and rewrote module text to make it relevant and accessible to the youth audience.

  • Translated complex climate change science and policy jargon to make it accessible to the youth audience.

  • Structured module sections, wrote active titles and headings, and ensured a consistent narrative and style across each module and the toolkit as a whole.

  • Sourced photographs and advised on illustrations and graphic design.

Handbook

  • Facilitated a virtual planning session with the CARE CJC team to define the goals of the handbook, identify content to include, and agree on the editorial style and approach.

  • Wrote the 70-page handbook based on lesson plans I developed for all eight modules.

  • Advised on the curriculum for the ToT and the training approach.
