Climate adaptation: Young people are the future

The Toolkit for Youth on Adaptation and Leadership is for young people who want to play their part in promoting climate change adaptation solutions that help safeguard people and the planet.

Climate change is reshaping the world young people have inherited, and they will bear the costs in the coming decades. However, young people are often excluded from leadership and decision-making activities related to climate change adaptation.

This year, I worked with CARE Climate Justice Center to develop an interactive tookit for young people on climate adaptation and leadership. It’s now live!

Designed with mobile in mind, the toolkit equips young people with the knowledge and skills to engage in climate adaptation policy, advocacy and action.

The toolkit covers climate change basics, adaptation, vulnerability, advocacy, planning, strategy, leadership and more. The eight modules are packed with resources, and learners can test their knowledge with short quizzes.

Lessons from young African adaptation leaders

Module 4 is one of my favourites. It features interviews with six young leaders who share advice on what it takes to make it as an entrepreneur with bright ideas for adaptation solutions in Africa.

The featured trailblazers are some of the winners of the 2021 and 2022 African Youth Adaptation Solutions Challenge (also known as the YouthADAPT Challenge), an annual competition for youth-led enterprises (50% women-led). It is jointly organized by the Global Center on Adaptation, the African Development Bank and Climate Investment Funds.

One of the entrepreneurs interviewed is Juveline Ngum, Founder and CEO of BleaGlee, a start-up in Cameroon using drones to find waste, which is then collected and recycled. Image credit: BleaGlee.

Share the toolkit

The toolkit is available online in English, French, and Arabic. Check it out here, and please share it with people and organisations who could use it to upskill young people on adaptation leadership.

(The Toolkit is a Global Center on Adaptation project developed by CARE Climate Justice Center with the financial support of Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.)
