Learning about AI (for free) with the University of Johannesburg

Did you know? The University of Johannesburg offers a free online course on Artificial Intelligence. I just completed it and learned a lot.

The course, Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR, is non-technical and provides a well-rounded intro to the basics of AI.

It covers the history of automation, machine learning, and AI, addresses current uses and future scenarios, and considers the social and ethical implications of this fast-moving technology.

The course consists of eight modules. Each is split into two sections. Each section ends with a short quiz.

I found the online course platform intuitive and slick. The learning content is a good mix of text-based lessons and short videos. I appreciated the short (1-1.5 minute) audio round-ups of key points at the end of each module subsection. The quizzes help cement key concepts.

I'd recommend this training to people who want to better understand AI and its implications for work and society. It provides valuable insights into the potential future that awaits us as our lives become increasingly intertwined with the algorithms shaping our experience of the world.

The course is free and entirely self-paced. You receive a certificate on successful completion.

Kudos to the University of Johannesburg for offering this as a free resource and helping shape the future of AI. And thanks to Letlhokwa Mpedi, vice-chancellor and principal of the University of Johannesburg, who put this on my radar when he was speaking at a panel on AI at the Daily Maverick Gathering, Earth Edition, in May.
