Comms consultant or freelancer? You need to put yourself out there
Sometimes, we comms folks aren't so good at marketing ourselves. We have all the skills to communicate, but prefer to stay in the shadows and let others do the talking.
I've observed this in myself, and I've seen it in others. I've noticed how it shows up and cripples the ability of freelancers and consultants to build a brand and secure the work they want to do.
It makes sense in a way. So much of comms work involves operating behind the scenes: writing the press release, the talking points for someone else to deliver.
But when you're doing your own thing, you have to get used to putting yourself out there. And who better to do it than you? Someone who communicates for a living.
It doesn't come easy. And it can be relentless. I'm still working on it. Facing fears daily.
But in today's environment, invisibility is a killer.
I've found it helps to take it in small steps. Set goals for marketing and brand building that are just outside your comfort zone, and when you reach them, set the bar a little higher for next time. Keep pushing the edge.
Keep building your online presence. Update your website, write those LinkedIn posts, get on that podcast. Email that prospective client. The worst they can say is 'no.'
