Talking scicomm small business at PCST 2025 Aberdeen
How to run a science communication small business was a hot topic at this year’s Public Communication of Science and Technology (PCST) network conference, held in Aberdeen, Scotland.
I joined a panel of science communication small business owners and consultants to share my experience of working as the founder and principal consultant at Human Element Communications.
The special session, ‘Small businesses in science communication,' on 28 May, covered business models, branding, marketing, partnerships, pricing, and more. The session was well attended and I was heartened to see the level of engagement from other small business owners, consultants, and freelancers.
I was honoured to share the stage with some of the best in the business:
Marlit Hayslett, owner and CEO of Hayslett Consulting.
Bruce Lewenstein, consultant and Professor of Science Communication at Cornell University. (Bruce also won the first PCST Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of science communication as a field. Congrats, Bruce!)
Tullio Rossi, director of Animate Your Science.

I left the session with a deep sense of community.
I believe that independent scientists and small businesses in the science communication space should collaborate and support one another. We can all learn a lot by sharing our experiences.
I’m looking forward to further opportunities to share what I’ve learned about building my business and brand.
